Wakeling wins, but Thorndyke takes over the Championship lead |
Blyton Circuit (Lincolnshire) played host to round three of the 2008 MDA Rallycross Championship, which included round five of the 2008 BTRDA Rallycross Championship.
In cold and windy conditions, it was Ian Thorndyke who set the pace in the Minicross category during the heats to qualify on pole position for the A final. Championship leader Andy Lee lined up alongside Thorndyke in second position on the grid, where he was joined by Revivals team mate and 2007 Champion Shelley Wakeling. Mark Griffin occupied the fourth position on the grid, with Andy Knowles, Kris Hudson, Neil Wade and David Bell completing the list of starters.
Dave Cox meanwhile, endured a torrid time of it after hitting the tyre bales during the third round of heats, causing heavy damage to the front right corner of the teams 2007 specification Mini. With the clock ticking, the team worked frantically to repair the damage and Cox just made it onto the back of the grid in time for the B final. David Bell dominated the B final, winning it by eight seconds ahead of Chris Cairns, Brian Wade and Cox.
At the start of the A final a first corner incident resulted in heavy damage to the left rear corner of the Andy Knowles Mini, bringing out the red flags. As the lights went to green for the second attempt, it was Wakeling who rocketed away from the grid to lead into the first corner ahead of Thorndyke, Lee and the fast starting B final winner - David Bell.
Mark Griffin was struggling after sustaining heavy damage to the rear of his Mini in the first start, dropping the Yorkshireman down to sixth place, behind Neil Wade but ahead of Kris Hudson. At the front the top three circulated nose to tail and as they headed down into the final corner of the final lap, Thorndyke attempted a "Tony Bell" style move around the outside of Wakeling throwing the car sideways. Thorndyke almost held it, but Wakeling nipped back through on the inside to record the win and close the gap on the Championship leaders. Second place for Thorndyke moved him back into the lead of the Championship with Lee completing the podium ahead of Bell, Wade, Griffin and Hudson.
After setting the pace all day in the Procar 1600cc category and securing his first pole position in the category, Martin Peters had the win snatched away from him, after the A final was red flagged when Neil Maynard embedded his Peugeot 205 Gti into the tyres. At the restart, Peters failed to make one of his trademark electric starts and lost out to Kenny Hall on the run down into the first corner. This is the way it stayed as the cars took the chequered flag, with Stuart Jackson finishing on the podium in third place, followed by Paul Woodhead and Andy Brinkley.
Bob Gooding emerged victorious in Revivals A with his Ford Escort, with Tony Lynch finishing second overall with the PSM Motorsport Renault Megane and Dominic Yates completing the podium. Ralph Budd was presented with the driver of the day after a fantastic display in his Mini. Richard Wakeling failed to finish the A final with his MG.
In the MDA Junior Challenge, Daniel O Brien took a dominant win ahead of Taylor Edwards, Junior debutant Bradley Bailey and Kelly Bird. David Martin won the BTRDA Stock Hatch category followed by Richard Horton and Darren Clarke and Daniel O Brien was the victor in the BTRDA Juniors, with Matthew Thompson and George Edwardes rounding out the top three.
Round 4 of the MDA Rallycross Championship and Round 6 of the BTRDA Rallycross Championship takes place at Pembrey Circuit (Carmarthenshire) on Sunday June 8th alongside the 2008 Rallycross Open Championship sponsored by Hi Spec Motorsport.

Pembrey (Carmarthenshire - Wales) plays host to round three of the 2008 Rallycross Open Championship sponsored by Hi Spec Motorsport on Sunday June 8th. The Channel 5 and MotorsTV televised Open Championship event, which also includes the 2008 Welsh Rallycross Superprix, will see the title battle resume in all four Open Championship categories.
‘Mad Mark’ (Citroen Xsara) leads the way in Division 1 after winning round two of the Championship at Blyton – coming out on top in a wheel to wheel fight with round one winner Mike Manning (Ford Puma). Manning who made a last lap attempt to snatch the lead away from ‘Mad Mark’ at Blyton is looking to make amends on home territory, to reduce the gap at the top of the points standings. David Binks (Mitsubishi Lancer) scored his first podium finish last time out and another top three result in the strong Division 1 entry could move the Newcastle based driver into title contention. The same can be said for Eddie Kinirons (Ford Focus) who is joint third with Binks in the Championship standings ahead of Tony Bell (Toyota Corolla), Bob Gooding (Ford Escort), Chris Langley (Ford Escort RS2000), Kevin McCann (Subaru Impreza) and Terry Briggs (Renault Clio).
Division 1 Championship leader, ‘Mad Mark’ added
“I decided not to compete in the Hungarian round of the ERC, as I did not want to spoil my chances of a win at Pembrey. This time last season we weren't leading the championship and I still won, so I would like to do it in style this year and lead by example. The added bonus of more Irish competitors and the Welsh Superprix makes this meeting very important in the calendar. We always go well at Pembrey and the car is performing exceptionally well as shown in France.”
Ben Power is another driver who will be on home territory at Pembrey and is looking for a hat trick of victories in the Super National category with his Ford KA. Power has built up a healthy advantage at the top of the standings, but one of the largest Super National entries for a long time will make life difficult for the Powys based driver.
Defending Champion, Allan Tapscott (Vauxhall Corsa) will need a top three result to get his challenge back on track following a non finish at Blyton, but fellow Vauxhall Corsa driver Paul Wakeling has been the driver on the move so far in 2008. The Revivals team have made great progress with Wakeling’s Corsa and has been a consistent threat throughout the season and lies in second place in the points standings.
Hereford based Mike Turpin made his debut with the new Vauxhall VX220 last time out and finished second overall from pole position in the A final. With drivers allowed to drop one points scoring round during the season Turpin cannot be discounted from the title battle. Jamie Lea plans to debut his new car at the event which is now close to completion. With several new competitors, including Irish drivers, Dessie Tierney (Opel Tigra), Barry McArdle (Peugeot 205 GTi) and Joe Cahill (Metro), the action will be fast and furious. And if you want sideways and spectacular – Dean Jones will provide the style and he has a strong chance of victory in his Ford Escort Mk2.
Procar 2000 is set to continue to grow, with the addition of David Ewin (Ford Fiesta) to the category. Stuart Emery meanwhile is determined to regain the Championship lead from Ashley Simpson (Peugeot 205 GTi), in an event that will see his Peugeot 306 appear in a new colour scheme. Stuart Emery added:
“We are delighted to announce that my team has secured a new title sponsor – Platinum Batteries, thanks to the high profile Television coverage that the Rallycross Open Championship sponsored by Hi Spec Motorsport receives and the media exposure that surrounds the Championship which has
provided the team with exceptional publicity. The car will appear in a new colour scheme at Pembrey which will be in a base colour of black and silver”.
Dave Baines has been busy making improvements to his Vauxhall Astra GSi to try and regain lost ground in his title defence, while an announcement regarding the drivers for the PSM Motorsport Renault Meganes is to be made shortly.
Conor Flynn moved to the top of the standings at Blyton in the Chris Birkbeck Rallyschool Junior Rallycross Championship, after recording a fine victory. Winner of the first round -Matthew Thompson will be hoping to strike back, but Daniel O’Brien, Jess Gwynne and Keifer Hudson are all hot on the Championship trail. Samantha Thom has had an unlucky start to the year, but is a strong contender for victory. The Junior category provided some excellent close racing last month at Blyton.
The battle also continues in the MDA and BTRDA Rallycross Championships – which features round four of the MDA Procar 1600, Minicross and Revivals Championships and round six of nine in the BTRDA Championship.
Craig Brown and Kenny Hall are to resume their fight in the Procar 1600 category, while Andy Lee, Shelley Wakeling and Ian Thorndyke will continue their three way dual at the top of the MDA Minicross Championship points standings.
Steve Bussey and Bob Gooding currently top the standings in Revivals, with Dave Black doing likewise Revivals B and Brian Thornton in Revivals C.

PSM Motorsport Ltd director, Peter Stott commented:
"During the winter months, PSM Motorsport Ltd invited the BRDA to run a round of the 2008 Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship alongside the 2008 Rallycross Open sponsored by Hi Spec Motorsport & MDA Rallycross Championship’s at Croft Circuit on Sunday July 6th. The BRDA accepted the invitation and we are delighted to welcome them to be part of this historic event in what will be day full of top Rallycross racing. At our last event we had 95 entries and we have had to impose a maximum number of entries for this event, based upon maximum grid sizes at the venue and the number of races we can accommodate into the one day schedule."
This will prove to be a event of significance as it will be the first occasion that the two main Rallycross Championships in Great Britain have run together at the same venue. Both Championships are televised by MotorsTV, while there will be additional coverage of the Open Championship on Channel 5 and British Championship on Virgin Media. The combined television package that this event is to provide will further increase the profile of Rallycross throughout the UK and Europe.
"For everyone involved, this will be a milestone event not least in the prospect of substantial TV coverage, which we hope will attract new audiences for Rallycross.” added BRDA Chairman John Horton.
The organisers have had to restrict the maximum number of entries at the event to a total of 108 due to a timetabled 55 races during the day. All three Championships taking part at the event will run individual heats and finals throughout the day, which will be rounded off by the 'Best of British shootout' race.
MDA Chairman, Ron Watson added;
“ It is a great opportunity for all parties involved in British Rallycross to show the way forward for the sport in the United Kingdom.“
The special 'Best of British shootout' race will feature the top five Division 1 drivers from the Rallycross Open Championship and the top five Supercar drivers from the Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship - fans will be treated to a first class day of British Rallycross action.
2007 Rallycross Open Champion - 'Mad Mark' Watson (Barnard Castle) stated:
"My main aim this season is to retain the Rallycross Open Championship title, but the event at croft in July will be a hectic one for me as I will compete in both Championships. It is excellent to get all of the top drivers from both championships together at croft and I intend to emerge as the best of the best on my home track."
